Indian Media and Entertainment Industry

Entertainment industry is one industry that is growing rapidly owing to media. There is lot many content available in English News  as well as हिंदी समाचार There are different segments like television, print, films, radio, music, OOH, animation, gaming and visual effects (VFX) and Internet advertising. Entertainment industry in India has had an impressive growth in last two decades. Earlier, there was only one channel Doordarshan in the 1990s but there are more than 400 channels in the country currently. Entertainment industry is growing rapidly in the country, then so is the case with the Indian media.

Let us take one example. If there is a growth in film industry, it is all possible because of media. Media advertise the movies, promotes the movies to the masses for the masses to watch otherwise how would people would come tom know about the movie. Film actor gain popularity because of media only.

Therefore, media and entertainment go hand in hand. In absence of one, another cannot survive. These are two industries that are growing rapidly. Digitization and higher internet usage help these industries to grow rapidly. Internet has become the medium for entertainment for most of the people.

India is one of the highest spending and fastest growing market for advertising globally. This helps in the growth of media and entertainment industry. One purpose of media is entertainment and there cannot be entertainment without media. It is expected that India’s advertising expenditure will be more than 12 percent and 13 percent in 2016 and 2017 respectively. Television segment is expected to grow by 12,3 percent in 2016 and 12.5 percent in 2017.

Advertising is growing really fast. Indian media has become the medium for advertisement and because of commercialization this sector is growing. Be it newspaper, television channels, radio advertisements are topping the chart and business concerns are finding this medium to be profitable for them as media can relate their products to the masses.

If we talk about film sector, the film industry has had a healthy growth of 9.3 percent in 2015 according to the report. With lots of advertisements and promotions films are getting recognition and reach to the masses. Even regional movies are getting recognition with the increase usage of internet and there are tough competition between Hollywood and Bollywood films. Actors go on TV shows to promote the films, organize events for the masses to get connected. That is how media is helping in making film industry grow.

If film sector is growing, then so is the case with Television sector. According to the report, the television sector has 17 percent growth owing to advertisement growth with increase in e-commerce spends. Television sector is doing really well. There are many channels coming up and there are popular shows which attracts masses increasing the scope for advertisement. Previously there was only one channel and that is Doordarshan, now there are more than 400 satellite channels with lots of entertainment shows, reality shows, daily soaps, etc. Television actors are getting recognition with the rapid growth ibn the television sector.

 

We cannot left behind print media which is the strongest tool for Indian media. It is the medium for information, entertainment, news and current affairs. According to recent report, there was marginal slowdown in 2015 compared to 2014 with 7.6 percent. Well, some publications were able to raise prices generating revenue.

 

Indian media and entertainment industry with the support of Indian government is at rapid growth phase. The Government of India supported Media and Entertainment industry’s growth with the digitization of cable distribution sector. The Government of India digitized the cable connection to attract greater institutional funding, increasing FDI limit from 74 per cent to 100 per cent in cable and DTH satellite platforms.
